Maximize your test experience while taking a great ride on MTA!

This MTA CharmCard™ Test Group Users’ Guide describes all the functions of the MTA’s new fare collection equipment when using the CharmCard™. It is important for you to carefully read all the sections of this guide. Having a complete understanding of how to use your CharmCard™ in conjunction with our Ticket Vending Machines (TVM) and faregates is essential. The TVMs are designed to handle most CharmCard™ transactions on the right side of the screen.

  • Under Transit Pass, select “Add Value”.
  • Touch card to target.
  • Select add value amount.
  • Select cash payment.
  • Insert cash.
  • Touch card to target.
  • Transaction receipt? Yes or No.

How to check current value on your CharmCard™

  • If the screen directions are not fully visible, press any button to begin.
  • Under Transit Pass, press “Check Balance”.
  • Touch card to target.
  • Read current value on screen.

How to add a Day, 7-Day or 30-Day Pass to your CharmCard™

  • If the screen directions are not fully visible, press any button to begin.
  • Under Transit Pass, select pass type.
  • Select cash payment.
  • Insert cash.
  • Touch card to target.

Purchasing a single-trip ticket without using your CharmCard™

If your CharmCard™ becomes defective for any reason you will have to purchase a ticket from a TVM to ride the MTA. Follow these steps:

  • If the screen directions are not fully visible, press any button to begin.
  • Select ticket type.
  • Select cash payment.
  • Insert cash.
  • Take ticket and get on board.

How to use your CharmCard™ on a Metro Subway faregate

  • Touch your card to the Metro Subway faregate target to enter the system.
  • Touch the target again as you exit the system. It will deduct the correct fare.
  • If you encounter a faregate with the barrier already open prior to touching your CharmCard™, DO NOT pass through the open exit faregate. Doing so will make your card “out of sync” and you will have to see the station manager before using your card again.

What to do if your CharmCard™ is lost or stolen

Your MTA CharmCard™ is already registered to you as a test group participant. If a registered card is lost or stolen the remaining balance can be transferred to a new card minus a $5 card replacement fee. If you need to report your card lost or stolen, please contact the MTA at 1-866-869-8726.
