How to use your CharmCard® on a Metro Subway faregate

  • Touch your card to the Metro Subway faregate target to enter the system.
  • Touch the target again as you exit the system. It will deduct the correct fare.
  • If you encounter a faregate with the barrier already open prior to touching your CharmCard®, DO NOT pass through the open faregate. Doing so will make your card “out of sync” and you will have to see the station manager before using your card again. The station manager should be able to get your CharmCard® back in sync.
  • Remember: the faregate will read pass products first and if no pass products are loaded on your card, the proper fare will be deducted.

Light Rail is a ‘barrier free’ fare collection system and requires the customer to either:

1. Purchase a Single-Trip fare from a Light Rail TVM - OR -

To purchase a Single-Trip fare at a Light Rail TVM:

  • If the screen directions are not fully visible, press any button to begin.
  • Press ‘Purchase Single-Trip Fare or Activate Pass for First Ride’.
  • Touch card to target when prompted.
  • Press ‘Purchase Single-Trip Fare from Stored Value’.
  • Touch card to target when prompted.

Your single trip fare is valid for 90 minutes. A paper ticket is not dispensed and not necessary to ride; your CharmCard keeps record of your purchase. There is not a ‘Round Trip’ purchase option with CharmCard. You must visit the Light Rail TVM each time you ride to purchase single trip fares.

-OR-

2. Have an active pass on your smart card

  • If the screen directions are not fully visible, press any button to begin.
  • Press ‘Purchase Single-Trip Fare or Activate Pass for First Ride’.
  • Touch card to target when prompted.
  • Press ‘Activate a previously purchased pass for first ride’.
