Welcome to the future of fare collection!

Starting in Fall 2010, the MTA CharmCard™ will be available to the public. The CharmCard™ is an integral part of the MTA’s fare collection system. As everything comes together for a late year launch, your commuting future with CharmCard™ is going to be spectacular.

CharmCard™is a rechargeable, credit card-sized, plastic fare card. It features an embedded, miniature computer chip to keep track of the cash value and pass products on your card. When you touch the CharmCard™ to the target panel on Local Bus fareboxes, Metro Subway TVMs and faregates your fare for each ride will be automatically deducted, or your ride on a pass product 1-Day, 7-Day or 30-Day Pass will automatically be verified.

The real genius of CharmCard™ is how simple, fast and secure it makes your commute.

  • No more fumbling for exact change as you wait to board the bus. Just climb onboard, touch your CharmCard™ to the target and you’re on your way!
  • No more worries about a lost or stolen card. The benefit of registering your card is cash balance or pass product protection. Simply call the CharmCard™ phone number (1-888-SmarTrip) to report a lost or stolen card and we will replace your card including your current balance minus a $5 card replacement fee.
  • No more waiting in lines at a ticket vending machine to get a ticket as the Metro Subway train is pulling into the station.
  • To check cash balance, add cash value or a pass product, just follow the simple steps on the ticket vending machine screen and you’ll complete your transaction fast the first time and every time.
  • Load cash, purchase a 1-Day pass and check balance on the bus farebox.
  • No more travel restrictions. CharmCard™ may be used on MTA Bus and Metro Subway and regional service in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, and anywhere you see the CharmCard™ and SmarTrip® names displayed.
