Welcome to the future of fare collection!

The new MTA CharmCard™ will be an integral part of the MTA’s fare collection system. CharmCard™ is a rechargeable, credit card-sized, plastic fare card. It is embedded with a small computer chip to keep track of the cash value and pass products on the card. During the CharmCard™ field test, when you touch the CharmCard™ to a Metro Subway faregate as you exit the system your fare for each ride will be automatically deducted, or your ride on a pass product (Day, 7-Day or 30-Day Pass) will automatically be verified.

During the test period, CharmCard™ can only be used on MTA Metro Subway Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) and faregates. Eventually, it will be used on any of the MTA core services and regional service in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, and anywhere you see the CharmCard™ and SmarTrip® names displayed.
